Mill Room Gallery
As part of our commitment to supporting all varieties of art, The Mill Room functions as an art gallery. Each MainStage show features a new artist or group of artists. Work is hung through the dining room and hall. While not all pieces are for sale, any art sold benefits the Mill and supports a local artist.
Artist Statement
My artistic goal is to create works that are soothing and sophisticated yet express an inspiring playfulness and joy. Paintings are often large, colorful and glossy incorporating sculptural elements and mixed media. A heating element may be used to seal and texturize. Paintings can be spontaneous and simply directed by the materials used. More often pieces continue the process of completing the expression of a recurrent sketch or theme.
As a side note, Holly was involved in theater as a teenager and child, including productions at the Little Theatre of Alexandria, and as a member of a touring pantomime group, which put on over 40 shows in one summer! Holly is honored to have her work shown in the renowned Swift Creek Mill Theatre, coinciding with the Theatre's production of The Diary of Anne Frank!

About the Exhibition
Swift Creek Mill Theatre is pleased to announce Holly Markhoff as the Featured Artist during the production run of The Diary of Anne Frank, is a contemporary mixed media artist known for her figurative and expressive paintings. Influenced by the elongated figures of Modigliani, and the gilding of Klimt, her work has evolved to incorporate sculptural elements as paints are built up between layers of glaze, creating a glass-like translucence.
Born in New York City, Holly grew up outside of Washington DC, in Alexandria, Virginia. She currently lives in Richmond, Virginia and has as a studio in her home, and in the city’s Museum District. Holly’s works can be found in gallery representations, private, corporate, nonprofit and museum collections as well as staged in the 2021 Hulu Mini Series, Dopesick.
The fine art will hang on the walls of the Historic Mill Room through February 24, 2025.
